Random Thoughts From The Bath

  • April is my favorite month and I'm feeling all mud luscious and puddle wonderful*. I'm thinking it's time for a few little giveaways. In honor of Nablopomo's April theme "Letters", I'll put together a nice gift basket to give away here on Wednesday. Please check back in with me for all the details.
  • The herb garden is chugging along nicely. The marigolds I planted around the perimeter seem to be doing a good job of keeping the animals (both household and backyard) out of the herbs. I chose them because they are cheerful and critters don't like the smell or flavor. I don't mind sharing a few herbs and lettuces with the possums and bunnies, but I want to discourage fecal matter in my kitchen garden. I'm really surprised that I had marigolds left over, though. I keep a garden journal and I've planted the exact same number of perimeter plants every year for seven years. This year I had too many. I'll need to figure out a way to plant the leftovers in an inner ring today without upsetting the balance. Perhaps I might pick up a nice Dill plant to put in today too.
  • The birds have been great fun this year. All the usual characters are back. The Goldfinches have just gone north, but not before I got to see a few glimpses of their spring color. That nice Cardinal couple are in the yard most of the time singing away. I love how they are never out of one another's sight. There are several Nuthatches who are all trying to woo mates by feeding them tidbits from the feeder. I secretly believe Mrs. Cardinal thinks the lady Nuthatches are all floozies.
  • I want to stop in the Farmer's Market today to see if there is anything nice to can. All of my winter provisions are gone, so I know it must be Spring.

*Now a little ee cummings just 'cause this is what I was humming to myself in the bath:

in Just-

spring when the world is mud-

luscious the little

lame balloonman

whistles far and wee

and eddieandbill come

running from marbles and

piracies and it's

when the world is puddle-wonderful

the queer

old balloonman whistles

far and wee

and bettyandisbel come dancing

from hop-scotch and jump-rope and

balloonMan whistles
