Mum's the Word

235#

There is a peculiar traditon in Texas. Not peculiar strange, but peculiar as in unique and Wonderful! It is the tradition of the Texas Homecoming Mum . Although today you will see versions in Oklahoma and a few other southern states, this is truly a Texas tradition. Some say it began with the turn of the century tradition of a University of Texas gentleman giving a school color mum corsage to his date for the homecoming game. Others trace it back to the Kilgore College tradition of ringing decorated keepsake cowbells at homecoming "to ward off evil spirits" and cheer their team. However it began, it is great fun and something I look forward to every year.

Last year's lighted creations for the boy and his date took me about two weekends to create. This year I'm also doing more simple ones for the children of friends. It's a bit of a hurried affair with both of the nearby highschools having their homecoming on September 8th, rather than the traditional October season. I just hope next year's Homecoming date is rotated to the end of the season by the school district.
